What Is LimeSurvey and What Is It Used For?

September 14, 2026 ·

LimeSurvey is an open-source survey platform built for serious data collection. Researchers, universities, nonprofits, and businesses use it to run structured surveys with branching logic, quotas, and anonymous responses, then export the results for analysis in SPSS, R, or Excel. Unlike a simple form builder, it gives you full control over the questionnaire design and the data behind it, and it can run entirely on servers you own. This article explains what LimeSurvey is, what people use it for, and how to get it running without managing the server yourself.

What is LimeSurvey?

LimeSurvey is a web application for designing, publishing, and analyzing online surveys. It has been in continuous development since 2003 and is released under the GPL license, so the source code is open and you can run it on your own infrastructure. The software covers the full survey lifecycle. You build a questionnaire from more than 28 question types, distribute it by public link or by email invitation, follow response rates live, and export the results. Surveys can be multilingual, so one questionnaire can serve respondents in different languages while storing answers in a single dataset. The company behind it also sells a hosted cloud edition, but the self-hosted community edition contains the core engine that most survey owners need.

What is LimeSurvey used for?

  • Academic research. Universities and research groups run validated questionnaires with randomization and clean exports straight into SPSS or R for statistical work.
  • Customer satisfaction. You track CSAT or NPS over time and keep the raw response data on your own server rather than inside a third-party form service.
  • Employee engagement. HR teams run annual or pulse surveys with anonymous responses enabled, so staff can answer honestly without fear of identification.
  • Public consultation. Cities and agencies collect citizen input with tight control over privacy, retention, and where the data physically lives.
  • Course and event feedback. Schools, trainers, and event organizers evaluate sessions with reusable templates and automated invitation reminders.
  • Market research. Quotas close a survey once enough responses arrive from a demographic group, and branching skips questions that do not apply to the respondent.

Key features

  • Branching logic. Show or hide questions based on earlier answers, including multi-condition rules and piping of previous responses into later text.
  • Quotas. Automatically close a survey or route respondents differently once a subgroup reaches its target count.
  • Anonymous responses. A dedicated mode separates identity data from answers, which protects respondents in sensitive surveys.
  • Rich exports. Download results as CSV, Excel, PDF, or native SPSS and R formats for analysis.
  • Token management. Send invitations and reminders by email while tracking completion status per participant.
  • Multilingual surveys. Translate one questionnaire into many languages and edit each language version independently.

LimeSurvey on OpenSysLab

Every OpenSysLab server is a private virtual machine in the region you chose at purchase. The app installs automatically in about ten minutes, and the Vibe-code agent inside Open WebUI can read, configure, and manage it for you — you just connect your own AI API key. Servers start at $6/month. See the LimeSurvey product page for plans and regions.

The bottom line

LimeSurvey is not the fastest way to publish a simple form, and the admin interface takes a day or two to learn. If you need real survey logic, anonymous collection, and custody of your data, it is one of the strongest open-source survey tools available.
