What Is Grafana and What Is It Used For?

September 7, 2026 ·

Grafana is an open-source platform for dashboards, monitoring, and alerting. It connects to your metrics, logs, and traces, then turns them into live dashboards your whole team can read. Developers, operations engineers, and site reliability teams use it to answer one question fast: is the system healthy right now? It also works well for business KPIs and home projects. If you are new to observability, it is the tool most guides and examples assume you have. This article explains what Grafana does, what people use it for, and how to start running it on your own server.

What is Grafana?

Grafana is an open-source observability platform originally created by Torkel Ödegaard and now developed by Grafana Labs together with a large community. The core is licensed under AGPLv3, so you can run it on your own hardware for free. Grafana does not collect or store your data by itself. It is a front end that queries data sources such as Prometheus, Loki, Elasticsearch, InfluxDB, PostgreSQL, or cloud services like Amazon CloudWatch, and renders the results as panels on a dashboard. Grafana Labs also sells an Enterprise edition and Grafana Cloud, but everything in this article applies to the open-source version you can self-host.

What is Grafana used for?

  • Infrastructure monitoring. Pair it with Prometheus and node exporters to watch CPU, memory, disk, and network across your servers on one screen.
  • Application metrics. Track request rates, error rates, and latency for your services, and spot regressions right after a deploy.
  • Log exploration. With Loki or Elasticsearch you can search logs by label and time range, then jump from a spike in a graph straight to the log lines behind it.
  • Alerting. Define alert rules on your queries and route notifications to email, Slack, PagerDuty, or a generic webhook when values cross your thresholds.
  • Business dashboards. Grafana queries SQL databases too, so you can build live KPI dashboards over PostgreSQL or MySQL without a separate BI stack.
  • Hobby and IoT projects. It runs happily on a Raspberry Pi, so home automation and sensor projects use it to plot temperature, power use, and device status.

Key features

  • Broad data-source support. Dozens of official data sources plus a large catalog of community plugins, from Prometheus and Loki to CloudWatch and any SQL database with a driver.
  • Dashboards with variables. Templating lets one dashboard serve every host, service, or region through a dropdown.
  • Unified alerting. One alerting system covers all data sources, with silences, mute timings, and grouped notifications.
  • Explore view. An ad hoc query screen for digging into metrics, logs, and traces without building a saved dashboard first.
  • Provisioning as code. Dashboards, data sources, and alert rules can live in Git as JSON or YAML and sync on restart.
  • Plugin ecosystem. Community-built panels, apps, and data sources extend Grafana well beyond the built-in set.

Grafana on OpenSysLab

Every OpenSysLab server is a private virtual machine in the region you chose at purchase. The app installs automatically in about ten minutes, and the Vibe-code agent inside Open WebUI can read, configure, and manage it for you — you just connect your own AI API key. Servers start at $6/month. See the Grafana product page for plans and regions.

The bottom line

Grafana is the default choice for open-source monitoring and alerting, but it expects you to bring your own data sources and learn a query language or two. If that trade sounds right, it is hard to beat. If you would rather skip the installation and updates, a hosted Grafana server gets you to your first dashboard in minutes.
