Odoo vs ERPNext: An Honest Comparison

September 19, 2026 ·

Odoo and ERPNext are the open-source ERPs most teams end up comparing. Both combine CRM, accounting, inventory, manufacturing, and HR in one system, both can be self-hosted, and both have a real company and a large user base behind them. The difference is philosophy. Odoo gives away a free Community edition and sells an Enterprise tier with more features. ERPNext gives away the entire product under the GPLv3 and charges for hosting and support instead. That single choice shapes most of what follows.

At a glance

  • Editions. Odoo Community is free under the LGPL, with a paid Enterprise tier. ERPNext is GPLv3 with every feature free and no paid edition.
  • Breadth. Odoo ships more apps, including a website builder, e-commerce, point of sale, and marketing. ERPNext concentrates on core ERP.
  • Accounting. ERPNext includes full accounting for free. Odoo’s full accounting app is part of the Enterprise subscription.
  • Manufacturing. Both handle bills of materials and work orders; ERPNext goes deeper on subcontracting and production planning out of the box.
  • Ecosystem. Odoo’s app store and partner network are larger. ERPNext’s is smaller, though active.
  • Hosting. Both self-host. Odoo also runs official SaaS on Odoo Online and Odoo.sh; ERPNext’s maker runs Frappe Cloud.

Where Odoo wins

Odoo wins on breadth and ecosystem. If you want your website, webshop, point of sale, and back office in one system, Odoo ships all of them as official apps that share one database. Its app store lists thousands of modules, the partner network is large, and a new major version arrives every year. There are more Odoo developers to hire, more training material, and more country localizations. For a business that wants one suite for almost everything, and values a big ecosystem around it, Odoo is the safer choice.

Where ERPNext wins

ERPNext wins on openness and value. Every feature, including accounting, payroll, and manufacturing, is free under the GPLv3, with no edition maze and no per-user license. The interface is consistent and modern across all modules. Manufacturing and inventory workflows, especially subcontracting and serial and batch tracking, are deep and included from the start. If your priority is a complete ERP at zero license cost, or you run a manufacturing and distribution operation, ERPNext makes a strong case.

Pricing and self-hosting

Neither product locks you into a license. Odoo costs nothing until you need Enterprise features, which are billed per user per month. ERPNext has no license cost at all; you pay for hosting or support if you want the maker to handle them. Self-hosting either means provisioning servers, managing databases and backups, and running upgrades yourself, or paying for the makers’ hosted services. OpenSysLab is another route: a private server with the app preinstalled and a Vibe-code agent inside Open WebUI that can read, configure, and manage it for you. See the Odoo product page or the ERPNext product page for plans and regions.

Which should you choose?

Choose Odoo if you want the widest range of business apps in a single platform, especially website, e-commerce, and point of sale, and you accept that some features require the Enterprise tier. Choose ERPNext if free, full accounting and deep manufacturing tools matter most, or you prefer a completely open model. If you are still unsure, test both. They are open source, so load a week of your own orders into each and compare before committing.
