Grafana vs Apache Superset: Which Should You Choose?

September 8, 2026 ·

Grafana and Apache Superset are both open-source dashboard tools you can self-host, and they are often compared. They solve different problems, though. Grafana is built for monitoring: live operational data, alerts, and on-call response. Superset is built for business intelligence: SQL exploration and rich reporting for data teams. This comparison explains where each one wins so you can pick the right tool, or realize you need both.

At a glance

  • Purpose. Grafana monitors systems and applications; Superset explores business data.
  • Data model. Grafana is time-series first; Superset works on SQL tables and query results.
  • Querying. Grafana uses each source’s query language, like PromQL or SQL; Superset is SQL end to end.
  • Alerting. Grafana pages an on-call engineer through Slack, PagerDuty, or webhooks; Superset sends scheduled email and Slack reports.
  • Stack. Grafana is one Go binary plus a small database; Superset runs a Python web app with Redis, Celery workers, and a metadata database.
  • Charts. Grafana covers lines, bars, gauges, and heatmaps well; Superset offers more than 40 types, including pivot tables and geospatial maps.

Where Grafana wins

If your job is keeping systems up, Grafana wins clearly. It is designed around live time-series data, refreshes dashboards in near real time, and its alerting can wake someone up through PagerDuty or Slack. It also reads the tools observability stacks already use: Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, Elasticsearch, InfluxDB. A single Go binary with a SQLite or PostgreSQL backend makes it light to run, and TV-mode dashboards on a wall screen are a standard operations pattern. Superset does alerts and reports too, but they are scheduled digests, not paging.

Where Superset wins

If your job is answering business questions, Superset wins. SQL Lab gives analysts a full SQL IDE with autocomplete, multi-tab queries, and saved queries, and the Explore flow turns query results into polished charts without anyone learning PromQL. The semantic layer lets you define metrics once so every dashboard shows the same numbers, and the 40-plus chart types, including pivot tables and deck.gl geospatial maps, beat Grafana for presentation quality. It connects natively to warehouses like BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, and Trino, which is where business data usually lives.

Pricing and self-hosting

Both are open source. Grafana’s core is AGPLv3, with features like SAML single sign-on, fine-grained role-based access control, and dashboard reporting reserved for the paid Enterprise tier. Superset is Apache-2.0, so everything, including granular permissions and alerts, is free, and a managed commercial version exists through Preset if you want SaaS. Self-hosting Grafana means one binary and a database. Self-hosting Superset means a Python app plus a metadata database, Redis, and Celery workers. If you would rather skip that assembly, OpenSysLab offers ready-made servers for both, with the Vibe-code agent ready to help you configure either one. See the Grafana product page or the Superset product page for plans and regions.

Which should you choose?

Choose Grafana if you monitor infrastructure or applications and need alerting that reaches a human at 3 a.m. Choose Superset if analysts on your team write SQL and need polished, shareable business dashboards. Many companies run both: Grafana watches the systems, Superset explains the business. Because both are open source and cheap to self-host, starting with one does not lock you out of the other later.
