What Is ERPNext and What Is It Used For?

September 1, 2026 ·

ERPNext is an open-source ERP built by Frappe Technologies, a company based in India. It combines accounting, inventory, manufacturing, CRM, sales, purchasing, HR, and projects in one system, and it is used by businesses in more than 150 countries. ERPNext is known for two things: every feature is free under the GPLv3 with no paid enterprise edition, and its manufacturing, distribution, and accounting tools are deep enough for real operations. This article explains what ERPNext is, what companies use it for, and where it fits. If you are evaluating ERPs and want every feature without an edition maze, this is the one to study first.

What is ERPNext?

ERPNext is a complete ERP application written in Python on top of the Frappe Framework, Frappe’s open-source low-code platform. It stores its data in MariaDB or PostgreSQL and uses Redis for caching and background jobs. Where many ERPs split features between a free community edition and a paid enterprise tier, ERPNext keeps everything in one fully open codebase. Accounting, payroll, manufacturing, and inventory are all free. Frappe makes money from Frappe Cloud, its managed hosting service, and from support plans, not from feature paywalls. That means the software can cost nothing, and your budget goes to hosting and help instead of licenses. You use it through a web browser, so there is no desktop client to install or maintain.

What is ERPNext used for?

  • Accounting. General ledger, invoicing, tax templates, bank and payment reconciliation, budgets, and financial reports.
  • Manufacturing. Bills of materials, production planning, work orders, job cards, subcontracting, and quality inspections.
  • Inventory and distribution. Multi-warehouse stock, serial and batch tracking, valuation, and reorder rules.
  • Sales and CRM. Leads, opportunities, quotes, sales orders, and a customer portal.
  • HR and payroll. Employee records, attendance, leave, expense claims, and payroll through the Frappe HRMS app.
  • Projects and service. Tasks, timesheets, support tickets, asset tracking, and a built-in website with webshop.

Key features

  • Everything is free. There is no community versus enterprise split; every module ships under the GPLv3.
  • The Frappe Framework. Add fields and forms without code, build deeper apps in Python, and use the built-in REST API and webhooks.
  • Detailed stock control. A stock ledger records every movement, with FIFO or moving average valuation, serial numbers, and batches.
  • Tax compliance. Built-in support for GST and other regional tax rules, with country localizations maintained by the community.
  • A clean, consistent UI. One interface style across all modules, plus a command-palette search bar that jumps to any document.
  • Flexible hosting. Run it on Frappe Cloud, or self-host with the official Docker setup when you want full control.

ERPNext on OpenSysLab

Every OpenSysLab server is a private virtual machine in the region you chose at purchase. The app installs automatically in about ten minutes, and the Vibe-code agent inside Open WebUI can read, configure, and manage it for you — you just connect your own AI API key. Servers start at $6/month. See the ERPNext product page for plans and regions.

The bottom line

ERPNext is one of the few ERPs where the full product really is free, and its manufacturing and accounting depth punches well above its price. The trade-offs are a learning curve, a multi-service stack to maintain when you self-host, and a thinner add-on ecosystem than commercial rivals. For manufacturers, distributors, and budget-conscious teams, it deserves a serious look.
